  • China Encourages U.S. Business Community to Strengthen Ties: Vice-President Han Zheng urged the U.S. business community to continue investing in China, emphasizing their role in fostering healthy and sustainable U.S.-China relations. While talking with the U.S.-China Business Council and the American Chamber of Commerce in Washington DC, Han highlighted common interests and cooperation opportunities between the two countries’ business community. He further stressed the importance of stable bilateral relations for the prosperity of both nations, praising U.S. businesses for their active participation in China's economic reform and also reiterated China's commitment to improving its business environment. American business leaders also expressed optimism about U.S.-China cooperation underscoring the potential for shared economic and technological ventures. Han also met with Elon Musk, who reaffirmed Tesla’s commitment to deeper collaboration, aiming to strengthen economic exchanges and contribute to a stable U.S.-China trade relations.

  • China Conducts Triple Engine Ignition Tests for Next-Gen Rockets: China successfully conducted three ignition tests for liquid oxygen-kerosene engines in a single day, marking a milestone in its aerospace capabilities, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC). The tests, conducted by the Academy of Aerospace Propulsion Technology in Xi'an, involved two 120-tonne and one 18-tonne engines, ensuring they meet pre-delivery standards for rocket assembly. This development demonstrates China's readiness for high-frequency launches of its Long March rocket series with the goal of supporting future space missions. This will reduce test preparation time from five to two days and boost efficiency for mass production. The Baolongyu test site, which has been operational for two decades, continues to enhance China’s testing capabilities and safeguard China's position in global space exploration. These advancements aim to enhance the reliability and timeliness of upcoming launch missions.

  • CPC Meeting Highlights Plans for Yellow River Basin and High-Quality Development: The Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, led by Xi Jinping, held a meeting on January 20 to review China’s 2024 accomplishments and outline priorities for 2025. The meetings praised the work of key institutions like the National People’s Congress and the State Council for advancing reforms and governance under Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. The meeting emphasised the need to adhere to centralized Party leadership and drive high-quality development to achieve China’s modernization goals, including strengthening internal regulations and advancing ecological and developmental reforms. Special focus was placed on the Yellow River Basin, a vital area for national rejuvenation. The meeting emphasized on laws enhancing water conservation and wetland management that are expected to be implemented in the near future. Party committees, governments, and central departments were urged to enhance cooperation and coordination with regional strategies, such as the Great Western Development and the Rise of Central Asia, in order to achieve high-quality sustainable development in the Yellow River Basin.

  • Myanmar Military Junta and MNDAA Ceasefire Agreement Brokered by China: China brokered a formal ceasefire agreement between Myanmar’s military government and the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) on 18th January 2025. This development comes after the seventh round of peace talks mediated by China in Kunming. Both stakeholders expressed their appreciation for China's proactive diplomatic efforts. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning highlighted that the agreement aims to create regional stability and security, particularly along the China-Myanmar border, and stressed the necessity of maintaining the ceasefire agreement in the country. She also stated that this is the first step towards reducing tensions and resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation. China reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Myanmar’s sovereignty, national unity and domestic peace efforts, stating that Beijing will continue to provide assistance to advance political reconciliation. The ceasefire agreement is expected to foster long-term security in northern Myanmar, benefiting both China and Myanmar.

  • China Strengthens Share Buyback Tool to Boost Stock Market Stability: China's financial regulators have enhanced the central bank's tool to support share buybacks, signaling an attempt to stabilize the stock market and boost listed companies' market value management. The People's Bank of China (PBOC) and the China Securities Regulatory Commission held a meeting to implement this facility, initially introduced in October. The revised tool reduces the self-funding ratio to 10%, extends maximum loan terms to three years, and also encourages banks to issue credit loans for share buybacks. Since its launch, over 300 companies, many valued above 10 billion yuan ($1.37 billion), have utilized the facility, reflecting its growing impact. Typically high-performing businesses with strong management, have been vital in promoting market stability and confidence, which is viewed as a critical step in supporting capital market performance and investor sentiment.

Chinese Student's 13-Day Bus Adventure to Hong Kong Gains Attention on Social Media: A 21-year-old Chinese university student, using the pseudonym Shen Tie, gained widespread attention for completing a 13-day journey from Beijing to Hong Kong using only public buses and spending just 793 yuan (US$110) on transportation. He planned the 66-city route, changing buses 124 times and covering costs of approximately 2,800 yuan (US$380), including meals and lodging. Called the “Iron Bottom Plan,” netizens believe Shen's journey symbolized China's northern and southern spirit. Despite challenges such as locating bus stops, language barriers, and long walks in rural areas, he appreciated the freedom and cultural insights offered by bus travels. Indulging in local cuisines, exploring old city districts, and conversing with inspiring strangers, Shen has inspired multiple viewers to chase adventures and discover unique travel experiences. Netizens have expressed their admiration for Shen’s journey, praising his unique perspective and experience of Chinese diversity.

Controversial Rape Case in India Sparks Nationwide Protests and Criticism: The recent conviction of Sanjay Roy for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor in Kolkata, India, has stirred public outrage and skepticism over the investigation’s integrity. The incident which occurred in August 2024 resulted in large scale protests in the country, involving over 300,000 doctors calling for justice and stronger protections for medical staff. Despite Roy’s conviction, doubts remain about whether he acted alone, with the victim's family and hospital staff alleging a larger conspiracy. Chinese media outlets have highlighted the case as being symbolic of India’s ongoing struggles with sexual violence against women. Reports hint at the failure of India’s justice system, pointing to tampered evidence and alleged involvement of influential figures. Chinese critics, including politicians and activists, argue that reforms following India’s 2012 gang rape case have been insufficient, as incidents of sexual violence remain prevalent. The Chinese perspective underscores concerns about governance and the working environment , urging India to follow a more transparent procedure in investigations.
