INDIA WATCH

  • Like China, India has also implemented a rural revitalisation programme under its Atmanirbhar Bharat project. Rural rejuvenation involves enhancing the quality of life and economic prosperity of present and future generations in rural areas. In India, this entails modernising agriculture and related industries, as well as providing essential modern amenities and services to improve the standard of living in rural communities. In 2020, the Ministry of Finance launched Atmanirbhar Bharat Package 3.0, which included policies such as the One Nation-One Ration Card, PM Awaas Yojana (PMAY), and PM Garib Kalyan Rozgar Yojana. Agriculture is a significant source of employment in rural India, accounting for approximately 15 percent of the country's GDP and employing 45 percent of the workforce. To boost employment in rural areas, the Prime Minister Rozgar Protsahan Yojana (PMRY) was introduced in 2019, with Rs 8300 crore provided to 1,21,69,960 beneficiaries. Additionally, the government subsidised fertiliser worth Rs 65,000 to ensure adequate availability of fertiliser for farmers and support agriculture. In the Interim Budget of 2024-2025, the Union Government of India allocated nearly 86,000 crores for the country's guaranteed wage employment scheme, the Mahatma Gandhi National Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGA), which provides 100 days of employment. The scheme received 60,000 crores during the 2024-2025 budget. A prominent program run by the Ministry of Rural Development aimed at ensuring employment is the Sampoorna Grameen Rozgar Yojana (SGRY). Launched in 2001, the program continues to serve its purpose. The SGRY seeks to achieve two objectives: providing supplementary wage employment opportunities in all rural areas and creating enduring community, social, and economic assets along with infrastructure development in rural regions. .
