On November 19, 2024, Research Associate Ratish Mehta conducted an engaging workshop on (De)constructing Political Narratives at FLAME University. Organized as part of ORCA’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Academic and Research Cooperation, the workshop focused on equipping students with the tools to analyze and craft narratives in diverse academic and professional contexts.

Narratives play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, influencing behavior, and advancing specific interests. In today’s world of competing narratives and counter-narratives, understanding the art of narrative construction and deconstruction is an essential skill. The workshop provided students with a framework for identifying the underlying intent, objectives, and methodologies behind narratives, enhancing their ability to critically assess the stories, events, and media that shape perceptions.

A key highlight was a Narrative Building Simulation, where participants stepped into the roles of international stakeholders to craft narratives that balanced public perception with long-term strategic objectives. Teams tackled high-stakes scenarios, exploring the interplay between escalating tensions and conflict resolution. This hands-on exercise deepened students’ understanding of how narratives are tailored to meet specific goals while addressing dynamic real-world challenges.

The workshop also introduced various deconstruction techniques, enabling participants to dissect trending stories, events, and visuals presented across multiple mediums, including audio-visual and textual formats.

This enriching session not only expanded students’ understanding of narrative dynamics but also offered them practical tools to apply these concepts in their respective disciplines.
