Organisation for Research on China and Asia (ORCA) co-hosted with The Indian Foreign Policy Project (IFPP) an online webinar on "Queerness & Identity in China," featuring Ms. Ahana Roy, and moderated by Mr. Ajitesh Vishwanath, Chair at IFPP.

The session discussed the history of queerness in China, Xi Jinping's policies, international pressure and corresponding reforms, and the extent of conformity in the modern Chinese State. It also covered the importance of including the LGBTQ+ community in the Chinese political economy and the incentives therein. Additionally, the discussion delved into the cultural and societal dynamics influencing queer identities in contemporary China. The webinar highlighted the evolving attitudes towards LGBTQ+ individuals and the role of grassroots activism in advocating for change.

Following the presentation, participants engaged in a lively Q&A session, where Ms. Roy addressed specific queries about policy impacts, cultural shifts, and international comparisons, offering further clarity and depth on the discussed topics.

The session was based on an article series written by the speaker as part of a project for Organisation for Research on China and Asia (ORCA). Read Part 1 of this series here
