Data Gathering Procedure for Social Sciences Research: Thinking Beyond the Box
On November 21, 2024, Senior Research Associate Omkar Bhole led an engaging workshop at FLAME University on innovative methods for data collection in social sciences research. Titled “Data Gathering Procedures for Social Sciences Research: Thinking Beyond the Box,” the workshop introduced participants to advanced techniques and resources designed to elevate the quality and relevance of their academic work.
Indian university research often leans heavily on Western sources, which can limit its distinctiveness compared to global standards. Addressing this challenge, the workshop emphasized exploring alternative resources, such as non-English literature, local-language materials, and emerging regional scholarship from Asia. By integrating these diverse perspectives, students can produce research that is not only globally competitive but also deeply contextualized.
A key focus was on innovative data collection techniques, ranging from Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) to underutilized archival and digital resources. Students were guided on how to access these sources effectively, ensuring their research projects gain depth and originality. Additionally, the workshop explored the growing significance of contemporary Asian scholarship, highlighting its potential to address pressing questions in social sciences with fresh insights.
Designed for students from diverse fields such as international relations, public policy, economics, psychology, and cultural studies, the session provided practical tools to enhance ongoing research. Participants gained actionable strategies to make their academic outputs more competitive, paving the way for broader opportunities in global academia and professional spheres.
